Environmental irony: no trash cans on Boracay.
Sounds silly but its true, almost. The environmental issues here are always causing an uproar from both residents and tourists alike…yet there are only 2 public trash cans on the island that I know of. Both of those are in D-mall. The only other trash area are the ‘separate your materials’ bins that the Boracay Regency maintains in front of their new dining area.
If a resort doesn’t separate its trash accordingly, then it gets fined. The biggest irony to that is the trash truck just tosses everything together in a pile in the back…moot point to separating it. Vaughn down at Blue Mango used to have these separated-materials bins in front of his place. Made it himself and generally was successful. But one day, someone got frisky and fined him because a passerby tossed glass in the wrong bin. Jeeze! At least he was volunteering his space and money for it. So he said screw it…and took the whole thing down. Imagine that, getting fined for doing the right thing.

A lot of resorts removed their trash cans because they didn’t want the hassle of having to segregate all that trash themselves. Who wants to volunteer to segregate someone else’s garbage?
