The airport fees will raise to 25 times the current rate of 20 PHP to an astounding 500 PHP during the next two years. Considering the airline promo’s charge about that for a ticket coming here, you can see how this is a considerable change. The reason behind it is to help pay for the improvements thats part of the recent contract that gave them management control over the terminal.
San Miguel Holdings owns 93 percent of Trans Aire Development Holdings Corp. (TAHDC), the company that holds the 25-year contract to rehabilitate and operate the Caticlan airport.
“The concession agreement is valid for 25 years, ending in 2034, and contemplates an increase in passenger and aeronautical fees from the current fee of P20 per passenger to P500 per passenger in 2014,” the company said.
Filipino Impact? Being my opinion only, I think it will put a slight crimp in the number of Filipino tourists arriving because they use that airport for the cheap flights on the small planes. The price of travel to-and-from here is the single largest payment of most vacations for them and if you add 33% to the cost of a flight then many will go elsewhere or delay their families vacations plans. Taking the Ro-Ro boat is extremely slow and you lose at a minimum an entire day (each way), sometimes 2 when they change the route w/o telling anyone, (one friend of mine spent 3 days due to route changes and mechanical failures). I’ve noticed that Filipino tourism has increased significantly with the advent of the cheap flight promo’s coming into Caticlan and they don’t have to take as much time off from work/school just to account for several days in travel time… simply hop a cheap flight and be back to your normal routine within hours.
Foreign Impact? Little to none. They don’t know the scuttlebutt about being here and lets face it, they’re tourists and while they might budget vacation spending, they already expect to spend money to have an enjoyable vacation thats far more than normal daily living expenses. Airport says 500 pesos? They don’t care, its a vacation!
