Finally made it home to Boracay and dysentary. I’d forgotten the water here, even tooth-brushing and showering, is pretty contaminated. Well, I didn’t forget, just kinda assumed it wouldnt be hard on me as if aclimetized like before.
I cope with large amounts of Tanduay rum and take-out food. And mangos, loves me some mangos.
My room [...]

Bunch of foreigners getting killed in the Philippines, and these are just the ones that got away. This was back in July and somehow I missed it.

Of the 38 foreigners, there were nine Indians, six Americans, five Koreans, four Bristish, three Germans, two Australians, two Canadians, and one each from Japan, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Iran, [...]

Is there a curse on planes that visit the Caticlan airport servicing Boracay in the Philippines? Now we have one that had just left Caticlan and slides off the runway in Manila. Just a month ago, another SeAir plane had a jacked-up landing there.

MANILA — A plane carrying 32 people from the Philippines resort island [...]

the United States, according to an online news report.
And the militant Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), which referred to the story of the New York Post that was posted August 7 on its website, is demanding an explanation.
Richard Johnson wrote the brief report in the Page Six “Eat and Drink” section of the NY Post online edition.
It [...]

Theres been another crash by Zest Air at the Caticlan airport that serves as entrance to Boracay. Although no-one was hurt this time, its a troubeling trend for the airliner.
In the January 2009 crash, (truly a crash), they painted over all the Zest Air markings and colors within hours of impact. Seems that almost all [...]

“MANILA: The Department of Health is officially announcing this evening the first confirmed case of influenza A(H1N1) in the Philippines,” Francisco Duque told reporters here by teleconference from the Geneva headquarters of the WHO.

Howie Severino (GMA News) was doing a documentary on endangered birds called Bye Bye Birdie. Amazingly, they found and filmed a female Turnix worcesteri, the first such pictures/vid of a living specimen in history!
Thought to have been extinct, little known information on record, globally isolated only to Luzon….. it was sold the next day [...]

Now I'm pissed off

Written by JD. No comments Posted in: Uncategorized

But now I’m pissed off. Something simple and small. On ScubaBoard, someone did another of those retarded if you dont like it, then get out comments after I mentioned how white people get charged more for everything here…. which is  true in every corner of this country that I’ve visited. I know its useless for [...]

Manila and room service

Written by JD. No comments Posted in: Uncategorized

Its times like this when I start thinking about leaving Boracay, it isn’t very clean. Manila has hot water, electricity, and a lack of people burning trash and fish and chemicals outside your window. The lack of shootings. Service staff that can get an order right. Fully cooked food. Everyday, I see something that [...]

Birds nest and chick peas?

Ok… OK….. Ok…. this is simply retarded. This is an open admission of  “Hello world, we dont have any standards of sanitation, food quality, or even product tracking – but rest assured, we’re pretty good at cross contamination!”
There is a list of ingredients on a package of Knorr Cream of Corn soup powder; it has [...]

Prawn Madness

I think we all know what happens when I eat prawns in the Philippines – the sensitive term would be ‘Montezuma’s Revenge’. Another phrase would be ‘ the 2-day food poisoning with projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea’.
Something like this:
But lately, I’ve been on this ‘prawn cracker’ phase. Even though the bag smells nasty like all [...]

Dude, where's my chips?

Written by JD. No comments Posted in: Uncategorized

Check this out, a one of those small single serving bags of chips like you get in vending machines. I just opened it – there’s only like 8 pieces in it! Bag sure felt full earlier…well, as full as normal. BTW, their site is www.oishi.com.ph

Longanisa is a Filipino pork sausage, in links normally. It might be pretty unhealthy, but when cooked right, its possibly the tastiest sausage around. Done properly, you end up with a very sweet juicy meat and a sweet thick glaze on the outside.
Its usually in shorter segments than western sausages and includes bits of fat [...]

In their drive to be recognized as societal contemporaries on the international scene, the Philippines restaurant outlet, Jammers, on Boracay has taken it upon themselves to redefine the “taco”. Not in a ‘Taco Bell with cute names and mystery brown/red sauce’ kind of way, but more of a ‘remove the taco shell and and make [...]

UN Human Rights Council

A feature on the news about the Philippines being put on the United Nations Human Rights Council. The interviewed government rep’s were beaming with pride at how this was vindication and proof that the current administration was corrupt free and excellent on human rights issues.
Most members of that council are selected for the single reason [...]

The only 2 points that story was making are not accurate.
Decomposing corpses in sea water most certainly DO carry disease. If this person is a medical practitioner, they should be immediately stripped of any ability to work in the medical field. They are dangerous. Corpses simply don’t sublimate in the environment… if they’re decomposing then [...]

UPDATE: these are two different stories I had thought were in the same area. The fire was a huge area of squatters that were filled with burka wearing women selling souvenirs at tons of stalls and had partially clothed kids running amok. Personally, I disliked walking thru there, it felt like taking a wrong turn [...]

I’m back in Manila after a long bus ride and its been raining this afternoon. I was hanging out with some local friends and finally broke down to eat with my fingers….something I swore I would never do. These people are just way too cool and fun to be around. Lunch was BBQ whole fish, [...]

I asked why there were so many police check points along one section of road. The answer: New Peoples Army. Yup, the NPA was in the mountains to my left. The person described them as revolutionaries that went after corrupt government officials and business leaders. I’m not sure what I should read into that. They [...]

Bus notes: Part 1

There is certainly a difference between deluxe and the cheaper first class buses of Partas lines. Perhaps its’ due to the time of day, but first class is a step above chaos, a small step. Its not the bus itself but the operations and atmosphere.
The deluxe was P805 for a 7 hour trip from Manila [...]

I got a wild hair up my ass and headed to Manila. I don’t really remember much about it but they said I arrived around 7pm. Audie invited me to stay with him in the Manila townhouse where we partied with B1, M, J1, G, S, J2, A, C, B2, and some girl that cant [...]

Today, July 1st, 2008 marks my one year anniversary on Boracay.
I had parted ways with Iraq and The Company in mid June 2007. No more contractor for me. They gave me a ticket going to Texas by the most lengthy and impossible route imaginable. I had no intention of going back to the USA. In [...]

Almost came and sat right on top of us. Wind speed estimates were from 90 to 120 km/hr. I dont think anyone actually recorded it here in Boracay.
